How to Keep Your Computer Cool While Gaming

When you play games on your computer, does it get loud and hot? This can definitely take away from the gameplay experience!

Your gaming computer contains hundreds of parts and components. When these parts are running, they generate heat – and a lot of it. As long as your gaming computer is well-constructed, it should be moving most of this heat out of the case using the fans. If the fans aren’t working properly, the temperature can turn extreme and cause potential damage to your PC.

Let’s take a look at some of the steps you can take to cool down your computer while gaming.

 

Create Better Air Flow

The easiest thing to do is to create more breathing room. There should be nothing sitting next to your computer blocking the vents, particularly in the back. This is where most of the hot air exits from. If your computer sits inside a cabinet, be sure to open the door throughout the day. Otherwise, the hot air recycles itself.

 

Clean the Fans

The purpose of the fans is to keep your computer cool. However, dirt, dust and pet hair can easily get into the computer and build up on the fans, causing them to stop working properly. To clean the fans, turn off the computer, open up the case and use canned air to blow away debris.

 

Replace the CPU Fan

Some computers use mediocre CPU fans that wear out quickly. If you’ve never replaced yours before, you might want to upgrade now. The CPU is the most sensitive and most expensive part of your computer, making it more prone to overheating. A new CPU fan will likely be better than what you have now.

 

Rethink Overclocking

If you’re overclocking your hardware, make sure that you are taking the proper precautions to keep the hardware cool. Otherwise, you run the risk of damaging your PC. While it may seem nice in theory to have more performance from your hardware, it’s not worth risking your entire system over.

 

Keep the Case Closed

Some people might tell you to run your computer with the case open to prevent overheating while gaming, but this is actually incorrect. Though it would seem logical, all this does is accumulate more dust in the fans, which will slow down their efficiency.

 

By following the tips above, you can encourage your gaming PC to run faster, smoother and cooler. Plus, you get the unseen benefit of longer lasting hardware, which you will thank yourself for in the long run!
