Threadripper PRO 5000 Arrives

Today we’re able to finally unveil our newly refreshed HD150, now powered by Threadripper PRO 5000-WX series. With the popularity of previous Threadripper iterations with our professional customers like content creators, designers, animators, and digital FX experts, it’s incredibly exciting to be able to offer the latest evolution of the platform. You can check out our full release here, or read on to learn more about what makes Threadripper PRO 5000 so unique.

What is Threadripper PRO 5000

Threadripper PRO 5000 is the latest version of AMD’s popular Threadripper workstation platform. Like the Threadripper PRO 3000 series before it (AMD did not release a 4000 series), the 5000 series uses WRX80 chipset motherboards. The same boards that supported the 3000 series will also support 5000, albeit with a BIOS update, but a few additional partners like MSI and Asrock have also added board options for this launch. More on those later.

Threadripper PRO 5000 is designed specifically for highly threaded applications like computational fluid dynamics, professional video editing, or visual effects. Some key advantages of the platform include:

  • Up to 64 cores, 128 threads at 4.5Gz Boost – ideal for both heavily threaded and frequency bound applications
  • Up to 2TB of DDR4-3200 ECC 8-channel RAM – for seamless performance even with the most complex tasks and visuals
  • Zen 3 architecture – AMD’s latest 7nm die for IPC improvements
  • AMD Shadow Stack – Modern professional security features for a modern world

Overclockable Platform?

Though the OG TRX40 Threadripper had some headroom for overclocking, the PRO 3000 series did not. This changes with Threadripper PRO 5000, though only with those new MSI or Asrock motherboards I mentioned earlier. We’re still in the process of validating some of those overclocking settings, so stay tuned to future posts for more details on how high they may be able to go.

Who is Threadripper PRO for?

The use case for a PRO workstation is pretty vast, but essentially anyone in need of a system to be used in an enterprise environment where the PRO Technologies are advantageous or users working with highly threaded applications. This includes verticals like Architecture, Oil/Gas, Machine Learning, VFX, scientific research, simulations, and many more.
