CAD / CAM Modeling

ProMagix™ HD60

If you use SolidWorks for modeling and design with CAD/CAM, we recommend a system with a higher core speed and lower core count such as our ProMagix HD60. Design and modeling in SolidWorks are single threaded, meaning you’ll be bound by the frequency of the fastest core, rather than aided by multiple cores. For power users, we can overclock compatible processors at your request, giving you even more core speed of the money. The end result – better productivity.

Rendering

ProMagix™ HD150

Local rendering designs with SolidWorks Visualize powered by Vray is a GPU accelerated process, meaning a faster GPU will improve overall results. Rendering with Keyshot on the other hand, is CPU intensive and multithreaded, in which case we suggest investing in multi-core, hyperthreaded processors like those powering our HD150.

SolidWorks FAQ

How many CPU cores do I need?

For most Solidworks workstation users, the ideal configuration is a high CPU core frequency with fewer CPU cores. Unless you’re also doing heavy rendering, more than 8 cores won’t provide much performance advantage. Not all user workflows are the same though, so be sure and contact us for an optimized configuration.

Don’t I need Xeon?

Intel Xeon processors are great for highly threaded applications or those that require ECC RAM, but for Solidworks, Core i7 or i9 are a much better value and typically will perform better overall.

Quadro or Geforce graphics – which is best?

Though we normally recommend Geforce cards because of their overall performance and value, Solidworks in one application that really requires Quadro to run optimally. Check out this blog post for more details, but Quadro is likely the best choice here.

Is Hard Drive speed important for Solidworks?

Yes, to an extent. As a general rule faster SSDs will reduce load and save times, especially when working with very large, complex models. You may see some diminishing returns with the very fastest PCIE Gen 5 drives though.

I don’t know what I need – can you help?
